A Generational Shift: Canada’s Youth Embrace Cannabis at Higher Rates

In recent years, the landscape of cannabis consumption in Canada has undergone a significant transformation. Younger adults are now more likely to use cannabis compared to their older counterparts, a trend that has been solidifying over time. This shift is particularly notable as it comes five years after the legalization of non-medical cannabis use in the country.

Understanding the Numbers

Statistics reveal that over one-third of younger adults aged 18 to 44 have used cannabis in the past year. This figure starkly contrasts with the 15.5% usage rate among adults aged 45 and older. The prevalence of cannabis use among youth signals a cultural and social shift that warrants attention from both policymakers and public health officials.

Product Preference and Safety

When it comes to cannabis products, there’s a clear preference for dried leaves, flowers, and edible cannabis. Consumers, especially the younger demographic, often opt for legal sources due to concerns about product safety. The legal market’s emphasis on safety appears to be a significant factor in consumer choice.

Gender Dynamics in Cannabis Consumption

The survey data also sheds light on gender dynamics within cannabis consumption. Among adults over 45, men are more likely to use cannabis daily than women. However, this gender difference is not observed in younger adults. Such insights are crucial for tailoring public health messages and interventions.

The Risk of Dependence

Frequent cannabis use raises concerns about potential dependence. Studies suggest that a considerable percentage of daily cannabis consumers may be at risk of developing a cannabis use disorder. This highlights the need for awareness and education on responsible consumption.

Legal Markets and Consumer Choices

The legal cannabis market in Canada has seen a steady increase in household spending, while expenditures on illicit cannabis have decreased. Consumers cite product safety as the primary reason for choosing legal sources, followed by convenience and adherence to the law. The legal market’s growth reflects changing attitudes and increased trust in regulated products.
