Explosion at PharmaCann Facility in Maryland Leaves Two Injured

An explosion at a PharmaCann extraction facility in Stevensville, Maryland, left two workers injured and caused significant damage. Authorities are still working to determine what triggered the incident.

Accident During Extraction Process Injures Two

Last week’s explosion occurred in an extraction booth at PharmaCann, where propane and butane are part of the process. Two workers were injured, with one sustaining severe but non-life-threatening injuries. Sprinklers within the facility quickly activated, preventing the fire from spreading further, according to the Office of the State Fire Marshal.

Four nearby properties were evacuated due to structural damage and water discharge from the sprinkler system. The Kent Island Volunteer Fire Department, in a statement on Facebook, indicated that the fire broke out while employees were conducting an extraction operation.

Emergency Systems Prevent Larger Disaster

Emergency response systems, including alarms and specialized ventilation, played a critical role in mitigating the impact of the explosion. Shore News Beacon reported that while the building’s exterior showed no visible damage, the interior sustained heavy destruction.

The fire marshal’s office noted the total damages exceeded $250,000, though the exact figure remains undetermined. Local officials commended the facility’s fire safety protocols for keeping the situation under control, limiting injuries and property loss.

Facility’s History and Ongoing Investigation

PharmaCann has been operating in Stevensville for four years, as noted on the company’s website. The extraction process, which involves volatile chemicals like propane and butane, is inherently risky and requires strict safety measures. Investigators are still analyzing what led to the explosion, emphasizing the importance of understanding any potential lapses.

The community surrounding the facility temporarily faced disruptions, with evacuated properties requiring clearance before resuming normal operations. While the incident has drawn concern, it also highlights the importance of stringent safety protocols in the cannabis industry.
