Weed Week: A Roundup of Cannabis News from Around the World

The cannabis industry is constantly evolving, with new developments, challenges, and opportunities emerging every week. Here are some of the most notable stories from the past week that you may have missed.

Weed Week

Thailand Plans to Ban Recreational Cannabis Use

Thailand, which became the first Southeast Asian country to legalize medical cannabis in 2018, is now considering reversing its stance on recreational use. The government has proposed a draft law that would ban the possession, cultivation, and consumption of cannabis for non-medical purposes and impose harsh penalties for offenders. The move has sparked criticism from activists, who argue that the ban would violate human rights, harm public health, and fuel the black market.

Australia Reports Record Cannabis Sales and Research

Australia’s cannabis market is booming, with dispensaries selling more than $3 billion worth of cannabis products in 2023, a new record high. The country has also seen a surge in cannabis research, with more than 100 clinical trials underway or planned, covering a range of conditions such as chronic pain, epilepsy, PTSD, and cancer. Additionally, more Australian seniors are turning to medical cannabis as an alternative treatment, with a recent survey finding that 15% of respondents over 50 had used cannabis in the past year.

Paris Fashion Week Inspires Cannabis Strains

Paris Fashion Week, which took place from January 18 to 26, showcased some of the most creative and innovative designs from the world’s top fashion houses. Some of the runway looks were so stunning that they inspired cannabis enthusiasts to match them with their favorite strains3

. For example, the colorful and psychedelic patterns from Dior’s collection were paired with Purple Haze, a Sativa-dominant strain that induces euphoria and creativity. The elegant and sophisticated outfits from Chanel’s collection were matched with White Widow, a balanced hybrid that offers a smooth and relaxing high.

Texas Sues Cities Over Cannabis Decriminalization Policies

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has filed a lawsuit against five Texas cities that have passed cannabis decriminalization policies, claiming that they violate state law4. The cities of Austin, San Marcos, Killeen, Elgin, and Denton have enacted measures that either reduce or eliminate penalties for low-level cannabis possession, citing the need to save resources and address racial disparities in enforcement. Paxton argues that these policies are preempted by state law, which classifies cannabis as a Schedule I substance and imposes harsh punishments for offenders.

Ireland Delays Cannabis Legalization Vote

Ireland’s government has approved a nine-month delay on a cannabis legalization vote, which was originally scheduled for April 20245. The decision was made to allow more time for a special committee to review a recent report that recommended the decriminalization of all drugs, including cannabis, and the establishment of a regulated market for cannabis products. The report, which was commissioned by the government in 2020, argued that the current prohibitionist approach has failed to reduce drug use and harm and that a more humane and evidence-based policy is needed.
